Jane Burns

Jane Burns is a Naarm/Melbourne-based visual artist specialising in weaving and textiles. They have been creating handwoven works on the TC2 Jacquard loom, a computer-controlled, manually-operated handloom that allows them to translate photographic details into textiles, merging photo-media with weaving while drawing on the history of textiles in activism and social change.

Their recent series, Movement (Arrest), consists of ten large-scale works exploring the tension between individuals and authority at the moment of arrest and will be shown in June 2025 at The Lennox Gallery in Melbourne.  In 2024, they completed a residency at UNSW Art & Design, developing studies for Stubborn Tangles, a new tapestry series examining the body in protest and collective resistance - in preparation for weaving this series in Aubusson, France in 2025.

A previous work, By a Thread, deconstructed images of endangered animals, emphasizing species loss. It was featured in Art + Climate = Change 2019, Art + Climate Change II (2022), and exhibited at MARS Gallery.

Alongside their art practice, they work as an environmental consultant, advising on climate action and conservation. In 2015, they were awarded Victorian Environmental & Sustainability Educator of the Year. They maintain a studio at Creative Spaces, The Meat Market, and have a solo exhibition of Movement (Arrest) planned for 2025.
